NVHWA was formed in 1972 by a dozen vineyard owner / home winemakers who sold grapes to various wineries in the valley yet retained enough second crop for their own use. Out of necessity they formed an organization to help one another with techniques, sharing equipment, technology and general information related to the making of wine at home.

NVHWA members discovered through sharing their wines with one another that they actually made some really fine wines at home. About that time in the Napa Valley a renaissance was under way: a fledgling wine industry was about to become a giant. As the world took notice of this great valley and its industry, NVHWA home winemakers became more involved in the competition of wines and established a judging contest at the Napa County Fair, which continues to this day.

More recently, NVHWA has sponsored one or two students to academic scholarships to Napa Valley College's Viticulture & Winery Technology program.  NVHWA recently became a 501(3)c not-for-profit corporation.

Today we have a fantastic organization of individuals from all professions who enjoy making their own wine at home. We meet periodically at various locations such as wineries, restaurants or at the Rutherford Grange. Normally, the meetings begin at 6:30 pm and adjourn at 9:30 pm-- and we always have wine to share with our guests and speaker.
